Camelot Journey - Ft. Myers to Lake Erie

On August 10th 2007 one of my best friends, Larry Leichliter passed away after a 5 year battle with cancer and its side effects. He loved life, loved the water and loved an adventure and this page chronicles one of his best!!
You're gone but won't be forgotten by those who knew and loved you...

Back in 1999, my buddy Larry and I went down to the Ft. Myers area to search for his next boat. We managed to pick what must have been the hottest time of year and his black Riviera kept us baking daily! As for a boat, he was specifically looking for a Trawler in the mid 40' range and a sailboat was the last thing that an ol' power boater like him would ever consider! After looking at quite a few boats that weren't what he wanted, his buddy Pat the boat broker said he had a boat out on the end of the dock Larry and I should take a look at. It was an old 1984 46' Island Trader Motor Sailer and in need of lots of work. We looked it over thoroughly and realized it had lots of potential. It offered loads of room, large stable hull and a good reliable diesel. The price was right as well. So we went back in and talked to Pat. Larry asked what those sticks were for coming out of the deck. I believe Pat said they were to hang laundry on (or something like that) and he said we could always cut them off if they got in the way! Larry bought the boat and the rest is history...

On September 20th, 1999 I flew down to Ft. Myers, Florida to help Larry with the trip North. Before heading out to sea, we spent about a week getting her ready for the trip from Ft. Myers to Catawba Island, Ohio on Lake Erie.
On the first leg of the trip, we took the boat around Key West and up the East coast. We found dockage for the winter in Charleston, South Carolina. The first half I was without a digital camera but captured some shots from the videos I took.
On the second half of our trip in the Spring of 2000, we departed Charleston and headed up the intercoastal waterway. At New York City we headed up the Hudson and took the Erie barge canal, which cut several hundred miles off the trip, but we had to take down the masts to do it. If we went the other route through the St. Lawrence Seaway , it would have taken us all the way up to Canada and back down into Lake Erie.
I bought a new Video camera and also put pictures online as we went, thanks to the wireless internet setup I had along for the ride. The setup consisted of a Compaq Presario 400 MHz Laptop, a Motorola Timeport Sprint PCS phone, and a HP digital camera. These items allow me to sign onto the net and post the pictures without a connection to land. Pretty cool !! You literally know the same day where we are and how things are going (Sprint PCS signal permitting). (funny how that was high tech in 2000!)
Larry and I piloted the boat up most of the way with Myron and Ken taking over for the last week. That last week turned out to be the most eventful part of the trip as well. Who would have guessed...

Note that I also added some pictures I found that weren't in the original ships log. If a new one is shown, it will be noted below the pictures description.
