I have had about enough of cruise ship infested tourist traps and loads of camera toting people without a clue. Luckily, a couple friends of mine found the Bay Islands (Roatan, Guanaja, Utila) off the coast of Honduras and decided to stay there for a while! My friends were previously located in Key West, as was I. They had enough of the high rents and associated pains related to running a business in the Southernmost city.
My friend Brian Rowland had a successful Florida Keys scuba charter boat (the Las Olas) and decided to part with it so he could get on with his dream of having his own dive resort. As luck would have it, he found a piece of oceanfront on the North side of an island called Guanaja, which is the Easternmost island in the three island Bay Islands chain. He then went about building his resort. Shortly after it opened, a major hurricane virtually wiped the place out! Several years later, he is finally back in business and life is geeing back to it’s normal slow Caribbean pace! He currently offers lodging in cabanas not far from the beach and has a bar/restaurant on site. His packages include all diving, meals and more. Check out www.guanaja.com for his resort, the dive packages he currently offers, and more pictures and information about the islands.

My friend Van was a booking agent for various tourist activities in Key West, as well as a USCG licensed Captain. He finally had enough of the daily crap associated with living and making a living in the ever expanding tourist trap known as Key West. Since the city basically decided to pave over every piece of character that was old Key West, Van decided to look farther Southward. The island of Roatan (the center island in the three island Bay Islands chain) has a road traveling almost the entire length of the popular dive destination, but was scarce on rental equipment to get the dive tourists around. Van set up the first large scooter/motorcycle rental business located on the West End and you can check out his site here. Roatan has an International airport and the diving is some of the best in the Caribbean! There is a wide variety of lodging from shacks on the beach to five star resorts. Whatever you choose, you’ll have a good time!
